Background

Not so many generations ago, having children, parents and grandparents living together under the same roof used to be the norm. For a number of reasons this way of living seems to be on the rise again and experts claim that it is here to stay.


The main benefits of multigenerational living are the inclusiveness of the oldest generation, a strengthened family bond and economic benefits. However, one of the biggest challenges for this way of living is dealing with individual needs, desires and habits within shared living spaces.


Together with Electrolux, we as a student team to find new ways of improving life in multigenerational family.

Final design

Electrolux Nora is a wearable device which allows every family member in the multigenerational home to create their own private and comfortable "personal bubble" while still being around their loved ones.

Foldable hoodie

To achieve this, three main features are designed. The first is a detachable hoodie, which can be unfolded and put on to reduce visual disturbance and create a private environment.

Active Noise Cancelling

The Integrated Active Noise Cancelling module which is close to the user's ears can reduce the noise of the surroundings and create a pleasant, silent space for them to focus.

Infrared heating pad

The Infrared heating pads which are placed on the underside of the device create comfort and help to equal out the different temperature needs of every family member, thus preventing households from heating up the entire room.

Easy cleaning and repair

Furthermore, Electrolux Nora is designed to be quickly dismantled for easy cleaning and repair. This also provides possibilities for personalization and customization for different family members.

Design process

In the beginning, our team analyzed what living in a multigenerational home means for every individual family member. We quickly realized that there are a lot of different needs, desires and habits of the different generations that all have to go together somehow.

As a starting point, we imagined all the different scenarios where people of different generations are living in the same space, but doing different things at the same time.

During the ideation brainstorming session, we created and sketched out three different concepts that all address the topic of privacy and individual needs in multigenerational households.


Then, we explored a large number of validations and variations for our chosen concept, through sketching and quick mock-up prototypes.
