DIMSUM
Culture inspired furniture series
Intro
"Dim Sum", is a traditional Chinese lifestyle and food concept. The conventional craft structure has been uncovered by reconstructing the cooking tool behind Dimsum culture, the steamer. Then apply this unique and ancient oriental handicraft to modern furniture design and integrate the HAY brand values with it, we created the "Dimsum" furniture series.

Background
It all started as an entry for the HAY Talent Award 2020, where we were asked to explore our region's cultural elements and keep HAY's consistent brand language. We conducted the brand analysis of HAY and discovered their brand triangle: art, architecture, and fashion. Then in "Dimsum" culture, the traditional Chinese steamed food, we found the bamboo steamer, an ancient and elegant craftmade cooking appliance.
Design Porcess
We set out to deconstruct the bamboo steamer, reinterpret the craftsman story behind it, and explore its potential in the context of contemporary design. So it can be seamlessly integrated into the current interior space aesthetics with modern and fashion furniture forms, which will continue to exude the charm of ancient oriental crafts and culture.
FINAL DESIGN
Cardboard rapid prototype
To better feel and evaluate the volume and proportion of the design in the real environment, a full-scale prototype was made based on the 7 mm thickness cardboard via laser cutting.
Final model
After the cardboard prototype, to evaluate the Dimsum pony chair in ergonomics and CMF perspectives, we decided to make a full-scale 3D printed model with polishing and painting.
